Red Bull Formula 1’s Principal, Laurent Mekies, acknowledges that the decision to build their own power unit for 2026 is “as crazy as possible,” but he feels it aligns with Red Bull’s DNA. Under his predecessor, Christian Horner, Red Bull made every effort for their own engine program for the new regulations, which was developed and built with the help of Ford at Red Bull Powertrains in Milton Keynes. As a new F1 engine builder, Red Bull faces a significant challenge competing against established giants like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Honda, with Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff likening their challenge to climbing Mount Everest. When asked about Wolff’s comments at the Grand Prix in Italy, the Frenchman disagreed but explained that he believes this incredibly ambitious program resonates with Red Bull’s DNA. He stated that taking the decision to manufacture their own power unit as Red Bull is a crazy thing to do, but it fits well with Red Bull’s reputation for doing crazy things. Horner previously said it would be embarrassing for those like Mercedes if Red Bull outperforms their power units in 2026. In a less antagonistic way, Mekies also cautioned that it would be “foolish” for Red Bull to think they could be on par right from the first year. He emphasized that they do not underestimate what they have achieved over the 90 years or so, so it would be very foolish for them to think they could come here and immediately be at the level of Ferrari or Mercedes. However, they are preparing in the best possible Red Bull way at the highest possible level, taking steps step by step to improve the power unit and the structure around it – its people and infrastructure as quickly as possible. He expects a year of hard work and many sleepless nights to reach the right level, but he views this challenge as a Red Bull challenge, and they embrace it.
